Which is better crowns or veneers?

My dentist told me he suggests I get crowns on my front 4 teeth. I was just wondering which is better for your teeth a crown or veneer and what the difference is. I know a crown goes over your whole tooth verse a veneer but is that the only difference. Are crowns painful?
